Chiropractic: What is it?
Chiropractic is a science-based system of healthcare designed to detect and correct spinal misalignments or subluxations. Subluxations are a serious condition that locks joints and creates many health problems. When bones of the spinal column are out of place, they press on the nerves, irritate them and create pain. Only a doctor of chiropractic can treat and correct subluxation.
Spinal subluxations interrupt the proper functioning of your entire nervous system. When the nervous system is impaired, the tissues and organs of the body cannot function properly. A wide variety of musculoskeletal, soft tissue conditions, and common health problems arise, including, but not limited to:
- neck pain and back pain
- migraine headaches
- leg pain and hip pain
- shoulder pain
- carpal tunnel
- ear infections and allergies
At Sykes Family Chiropractic, we perform precise, gentle, and effective chiropractic adjustments to align the spine and safely unlock joints. From infants to seniors, chiropractic adjustments are the most essential part of your healthcare regimen because they ensure the proper spinal alignment and maximum nerve function throughout the entire body. Dr. Sykes prides himself on his individual, customized treatment plans for each of his patients. He works in partnership with his patients to restore the proper alignment of the spine and create harmony with the nervous system. When this is achieved, the body can heal itself and you can enjoy optimal health and wellness!
At Sykes Family Chiropractic, we teach our patients how to perform special exercises which can help strengthen and correct the irregularities in the body which may be causing pain. Many of these corrective exercises can actually be performed in the comfort of your own home to help improve the effectiveness of your chiropractic care.. In addition to skeletal misalignment, you may be experiencing pain that is caused by muscles and connective tissues which are out of their proper place. Other types of pain such as back pain, neck pain, and headaches are caused by muscles and tissues that are being used improperly, causing injuries over time. In each case, targeted corrective exercises and stretches taught by Dr. Sykes will help you feel good while also helping your body achieve balance and health.
Poor posture means your spinal bones are not properly aligned and therefore your muscles, joints and ligaments cannot work optimally. Unhealthy posture is often caused by an accumulation of traumas to the spine throughout life. These traumas can be obvious, like car accidents, sports or work injuries and slips or falls. On the other hand, many postural changes occur more gradually with poor work ergonomics, sleep positions, excessive sitting and repetitive postures or habits. Inevitably, poor posture often leads to pain in the back and neck, along with headaches and sometimes numbness, tingling or pain in the limbs. Poor posture can even cause “slipped discs”, pinched nerves and spinal arthritis.
A child’s spine can be the most neglected part of their health care profile. Children have frequent falls and injuries and many spinal problems can only be corrected at a young age. While many children do not present symptoms of spinal subluxations until later in life, some suffer from pediatric symptoms such as growing pains, sports injuries, belly aches, ear infections, frequent colds or allergies, and asthma and scoliosis, among others.
The goal of pediatric chiropractic care at Sykes Family Chiropractic is to monitor the growth and development of a child’s spine, and correct small problems before they become big ones later in life. Similar to teaching children to take care of their teeth (vital bones of the body!) so they will have healthy teeth as adults, Sykes Family Chiropractic educates families on the importance of spinal care for children to create healthy spines-and bodies-later in life.
A woman’s body goes through a lot of postural change during pregnancy due to the body’s preparation for birth. Pelvic misalignment is very common due to ligaments stretching and body weight shifting. This can lead to low back and sciatic or leg pain, as well as neck, upper and mid-back pain as body weight increases and shifts. Dr. Sykes is proficient at the Webster Technique, a chiropractic technique specifically designed to treat pregnant women, which has over an 85% success rate for correcting a baby's breech position (buttocks first) inside the mother's womb, prior to the birth process. Subluxation of the sacrum causes the tightening and torsion of the specific pelvic muscles and ligaments producing uterine constraint. It is these tense muscles and ligaments, and their constraining effect on the uterus, which prevent the baby from comfortably assuming the correct birth position. The Webster Technique is defined as the specific chiropractic analysis and adjustment that reduces interference to the nerve system facilitating balance in the pelvic and abdominal muscles as well as ligaments of a pregnant woman. This, in turn, reduces constraint to the woman's uterus allowing the baby to get into the best possible position for birth. Women under regular chiropractic care during their pregnancies have been shown to experience less pain during their pregnancies, as well as during labor and delivery, and shorter delivery times, as well.
